The following books are worth a read!
Being Mortal, by Athul Gawande
When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalanithi
Honeycomb, by Carol Frost
Gawande describes his experiences as a doctor working with hospice care. His portrayals of his own grandfather in India and his wife's grandmother in the US allow a complex understanding of how cultures accept and value aging and the independence of the elderly.
Kalanithi's story describes his journey from a successful neurosurgeon and graduate of Stanford, to a sick father-to-be with IV metastatic lung cancer. He quickly becomes aware of the life changes that come with being sick but won't let the idea of death cause him to stop living.
Frost's collection of poems describe her mother's battle with mental illness.
